HOW DOES SOLAR ENERGY WORK?
Solar energy systems work when sunlight hits on a Solar panel (otherwise known as photovoltaic or PV module) to trigger the flow of electric current. The current produced from the PV panel is regulated and controlled by an arrangement of inverters, batteries, solar charge controllers etc. The inverter in turn converts direct current (DC) into alternating current (AC). It is the alternating current (AC) that is needed for use in appliances for industries, households and offices.
HOW ARE SOLAR PANELS MADE?
Solar panel is an electrical device consisting of a large array of connected solar cells. The panel itself is primarily made from silicon amidst several steps and processes.
Silicon is a non-metallic chemical element in the carbon family that makes up 28% of the earth's crust. In a combined state, silicon is found in mineral deposits such as rocks and sand. To convert sand or silicon to solar, it is purified using a heating separator, slicing the pure silicon and layering it to conduct electricity with special anti-reflective slabs assembled in frames that can hold between 60 to 72 cells.
The PV cell is the building block of any solar panel. Whereas solar panels are made up of six different components, the photovoltaic (PV) cell is the most outstanding among them all because it actually generates electricity by converting the sunlight that hits on the solar panel into electrical energy. It is this conversion by a solar cell that is known as the "photovoltaic effect" of solar energy systems . And for this reason, solar cells are said to be "photovoltaic ".
A PV cell therefore could be defined as a solar cell, an electrical device or an energy harvesting technology that converts solar energy into useful electricity through the photovoltaic effect.
A PV effect on its own is a combination of both physical and chemical phenomena that generates electric current in a PV cell when it is exposed to sunlight.
HOW DOES SOLAR PANELS GENERATE ELECTRICITY?
As the solar panel faces the sun, light particles called "photons" excite or send alert signals to silicon atoms on the solar panel. This alert triggers or knocks out electrons from the silicon and this reaction generates electricity.
Photons are minute energy packets of electromagnetic radiation and the basic unit of all light. They are the elementary particles of light that first hit the solar panel as they are emitted from sunlight.
It might interest you to know that solar panels are made up of many smaller photovoltaic cells. In other words, many solar cells link together to make up a solar panel.
